This chemical analysis of water filters from the water filtration system of a copper plumbed single family residence was instigated by observations by the residents of rust and brown water resulting in discoloration of the filters, and an abnormally high frequency of replacement required of the water filters. To account for the filter discoloration and high frequency of required replacement, the possibility of a rupture of a transmission line in the municipal water system resulting in backflow of both bacterial and chemical contaminants is considered. Water filters are analyzed for both metals accumulation and microbiological contamination. Concentrations of metals measured on the water filter are compared to metals concentrations measured in residence water samples taken from water outlets at prefiltration and postfiltration locations in the residence water distribution system.
