An elderly female patient complained of severe irritation to eyes, nose and throat, and of a burning pain on her skin. She provided samples for chemical analysis including her own cloth blouse and a cloth sample cut from her living room couch, both of which she suspected of having been contaminated with toxic chemicals. Using special extraction techniques we were able to positively identify by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry and to quantitatively estimate the concentrations of seven (7) toxic volatile organic compounds. Two (2) of the volatile organic compounds positively identified in this analysis are soil or insecticidal fumigants whose caustic vapors are known to cause mucuous membrane irritation to eyes, nose, throat and burning pain on dermal contact.
